Dendrology

In the fall of 2005 I made the time to attend the Forestry 51 Dendrology course at our local college, College of the Redwoods (instructor Teresa Sholars). The class was on Fridays, consisting of weekly field trips  where we learned the common and Latin names for native trees and shrubs.  We also learned identification characteristics, tree biology, forest ecology, plant communities, etc . . . . "we learned the difference between pinately compound leaves with serrated margins and a simple palmately veined leaf."

One of our assignments in the class was to make flash cards. These were to help the students remember the common and Latin names. At first I was reluctant to take time off work, but what I personally learned and the fun I had was well worth any sacrifice of time. This class was a terrific experience.
